Motorcyclist injured in a hit-and-run accident in Florida

Florida weather is perfect for motorcycle riding. However, as more and more bikers share the road with motor vehicles, the chances of a motorcycle accident also increase.

A 55-year-old man on a motorcycle was involved in a hit-and-run accident near Tampa Bay, Florida. The motorcyclist was reportedly travelling southbound in the center lane of U.S. 41 when a car attempted to merge from the right lane, striking the motorcycle. The Florida Highway Patrol stated that the vehicle driver apparently failed to see the biker.

The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital. The driver fled the scene in what police suspect is a red or maroon compact car. The authorities are seeking help from the public.

Given that motorcyclists have little protection in an accident, the outcome of a collision with a motor vehicle usually involves serious injuries or even fatalities. In addition, drivers sometimes fail to see the motorcyclists sharing the road with them. In fact, two-thirds of motorcycle accidents associated with vehicular collisions stem from violations of the motorcycle's right-of-way, and the other driver likely caused the accident.

In such cases, the driver may be legally responsible for any resultant injuries and damages. And in a hit-and-run accident, the driver at fault may face not only a lawsuit for compensation but also criminal charges for leaving the scene.

Motorcyclists injured in hit-and-run accidents may be awarded compensation, which varies depending on the state. However, the ultimate amount is usually based on lost earning capacity, existing and future medical bills and emotional distress. Other damages may be available if the victim sustains a debilitating injury or dies.
