Brain injuries after a motorcycle accident

The Florida roadways see plenty of motorcyclists, and it is important to be cognizant of them. Even with that, a motorcycle accident is often unavoidable. Motorcyclists are notoriously vulnerable to severe injury even if they are taking all the proper precautions, wearing protective equipment and operating their bikes safely. One common issue that a motorcycle accident victim will face is a head injury. When there is a head injury, there is a chance that it will also result in a brain injury. Understanding the potential problems that come with a brain injury is important to the victim and his or her family.

It is reported that 2.4 million people have a brain injury on an annual basis. A large number of them occur on the road. Since conscious and unconscious factors can be affected, the injured person can face many problems after a brain injury. Breathing, body temperature, senses, mood, behavior and control of normal bodily functions are just a few of the factors that can be damaged.

If damage was done to the parietal lobe (the top of the brain), there can be a loss of perception and the sense of touch. There could be an inability to differentiate between size, shapes and colors. The occipital region is in the back of the brain and vision can be affected by an injury. The cerebellum is at the base of the brain and close to the spinal cord. Injuries to this area can cause balance problems, a decline in skilled motor activity, coordination issues and visual perception disorders.

The brain stem works with breathing, attention, concentration, arousal, consciousness, heart rate and sleep and wake cycles. The frontal lobe is responsible for organization, speech, awareness, personality, emotions, attention and concentration. The temporal lobe deals with memory, the understanding of language, proper sequencing, hearing and organization.

Needless to say, those who suffer a brain injury to any area can face long-term difficulty in functioning. In a worst-case scenario, they will no longer be able to work and will need assistance every day for the rest of their lives. If this type of injury happens in a motorcycle accident, the victim needs to understand how to seek financial recovery with help from an attorney.
