Victim of drunk driver awarded $8 million in damages in Florida

This blog recently discussed the serious consequences for drunk drivers and their victims following a drunk driving accident. Such an accident is likely to generate much harm and damages, causing victims to take steps to protect their rights and recover compensation for their losses.

In a Florida community northeast of the Tampa area, a victim of a drunk driving accident recently won an $8 million verdict against the accused drunk driver in her case. The victim suffered serious injuries as a result of the drunk driving accident. The drunk driver was speeding at 100 miles per hour at the time he careened into the victim's car.

The victim received compensation for damages including medical expenses, permanent injury and pain and suffering damages. The drunk driver's insurance company may be required to pay the damages awarded. According to reports, the 28-year old driver's blood test indicated he was over the legal limit to operate a vehicle. Based on the blood test, the man's blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit, rendering him impaired at the time of the drunk driving accident; however, there was confusion related to criminal charges that were never brought. Pending lab results, the driver was facing two counts of felony DUI with serious bodily injury.

The 42-year old victim noted that the drunk driving accident had changed her life forever. She recounted surgeries, countless doctors' appointments, injections and therapy. She also recounted feeling angry, frustrated, disappointed and heartbroken that justice had not been served. She further noted that she lives with daily pain. When a victim of a drunk driver has suffered serious injuries and harm, personal injury legal options may be available to help them recover compensation for damages.

Victims may be able to recover compensation for physical, financial and emotional damages suffered in a drunk driving accident such as medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering damages. A drunk driving accident can have a tremendous negative impact on the lives of victims, which is why it is important for them to be familiar with the legal resources available to them.
