Florida teenager now in good condition after car accident

A 16-year-old girl's condition is improving after being involved in a car accident near Tampa, Florida. The girl tried to cross the street outside of the crosswalk, when a southbound white car hit her. The girl was unconscious when the firefighters arrived at the scene.

Based on preliminary observations, the girl appeared to have sustained a serious head injury. Responders transported her to the hospital in critical condition. She is now listed in good condition.

The accident occurred near a school where the girl is studying. The extent of her injuries remains unclear. Local police are investigating the accident.

It is fortunate that the girl survived the accident. In Florida, 500 fatal pedestrian accidents happen each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over the course of eight years, the highest number of those accidents occurred in 2006 with 530 cases. Teenagers, such as in this case, are the most likely victims of pedestrian accidents.

In this car accident, it is unclear who was at fault. But the incident highlights the danger to pedestrians. Although walking seems safe, when the worst happens and a walker is hit, their lack of protection puts them at unusually high risk of a serious or even lethal injury.

As a result, it is important for drivers to keep their eyes focused on the road. For example, this accident happened near a school, a place where people on foot are always a part of traffic.

A negligent driver is liable in the event that he or she causes an accident. Once it is established that the driver's negligence contributed to the accident, the victim may file a lawsuit to claim compensation.
