How does alcohol affect one’s driving?

Many Tampa area residents already know that drunk driving is dangerous behavior that can lead to devastating accidents that injure or kill innocent people. However, many Floridians never really stop to figure out how alcohol affects their ability to drive. After all, while someone who is clearly intoxicated is pretty obviously not able to drive a vehicle or, for that matter, handle any other serious task, a person who is just buzzed might on the surface seem like he or she is fine to drive.

As a drug, though, any amount of alcohol affects the way one’s body works. How great this effect is dependant on the individual and how much alcohol that individual consumed over how much time. Alcohol tends to slow people down in many respects.

For example, people simply do not respond to sudden dangers or make quick judgment calls when they have had alcohol. The way their eyes and feet hands work slow down as well. This slowing of the body leads to problems like blurry vision or an inability to determine distances and locations of other cars. In short, alcohol puts the body out of sync.

While this is fine or even fun when someone is in a social situation, the result is often not so good when a person jumps behind the wheel of a car or truck in such a state. This is because the alcohol can easily leave a person in no condition to operate what really is a multi-ton piece of machinery.

Drinking and driving is not something to be taken lightly or to worry about only when the police are around. A person who drinks and then drives, even if they think they are alright, are putting their lives and the lives of others at risk. If they do cause a serious accident, those whom a drunk driver hurt may pursue compensation for their losses.
