Police investigated a recent accident involving several vehicles on a busy street in the Tampa area which sent three people to the hospital, although initial reports were that the victims’ injuries showed no apparent signs of being serious.
According to police, a driver of a pickup truck was operating his vehicle “recklessly” along the road and slammed in to another vehicle from behind. The pickup then continued to move forward and hit two more cars before crossing over the road’s median. When it crossed the median, the pickup rolled over, colliding with two more cars that were traveling in the opposite direction.
One of the three people who went to the hospital was the driver of the pickup, and, although he was described as being reckless, police also said that he may have been dealing with a medical problem while in his vehicle, which made it difficult for him to control his driving. Fortunately, the other 7 car accident victims did not require further medical treatment.
Although it may be true that the driver who apparently caused this multi-vehicle pileup had a medical problem and thus did not act maliciously, he may still be responsible to pay compensation not only for all of the damage to the other vehicles but also for any medical bills, lost wages and the like which his victims may have suffered. These injuries might not have been apparent at the time of the accident.
After all, Floridians have an obligation to maintain control of their vehicles, and if a medical issue prevents them from doing so, their duty is either to get treatment or find another safer means of transportation.
