Thanksgiving travel is looking to be busy this year

The roads are typical busy in the Tampa area and throughout Florida every Thanksgiving, and this year will likely be no exception.

In fact, the American Automobile Association, or AAA, is anticipating the busiest traveling season this Thanksgiving in 13 years, that is, since 2005. The AAA suggests that even in the face of higher gas prices, the strong economy has given travelers the financial security and confidence boost to hit the roads.

The AAA estimates that 48.5 million people will drive at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving this year, which is five percent more than the number of people who drove last year. While some will likely see this as good news, one drawback is that it will naturally mean more traffic on Florida's highways and other roads. In fact, some predict a swelling of motor vehicle traffic to four times the normal amount.

In practice, more traffic is going to mean the possibility of more car accidents, which is one more reason why both travelers and those just doing their usual commuting around town need to be especially careful over the next few weeks.

Specifically, if there are going to be more and longer traffic jams, motorists need to stay alert, keep a safe following distance and make sure to keep their eyes and minds on the road in front of them. If they fail to take these simple steps, what is supposed to be a happy holiday can quickly turn into a difficult or even tragic experience in the wake of a serious automobile accident.

While no amount of money can undo such an unfortunate circumstance, victims of motor vehicle accidents over these holidays should remember that legally, they may be entitled to compensation for their losses.
