Drunk driver just hit your car? Do this

By now, everybody knows that drunk driving isn't just a bad idea -- it's illegal. Yet, there are plenty of people who will still get behind the wheel of their vehicles after having a few drinks. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were over 5,000 crashes involving confirmed drunk drivers in the state in 2018 alone.

If you're in a wreck, how do you know if the other driver is drunk? What should you do? Here are some suggestions:

1. Look for obvious signs of intoxication

Some people are just bad drivers. Other people make foolish mistakes and cause a wreck. You can usually spot an intoxicated driver, however, because you'll see signs like:

  • Slurred speech
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Flushed skin
  • Confusion
  • Stumbling

Naturally, you should also suspect drunk driving if you see beer or liquor bottles in the other driver's car or can smell alcohol on them.

2. Do not make accusations to the other driver

If you openly accuse the driver who hit you of being intoxicated, they're likely to get defensive. That could lead to hostility and violence -- or the driver might hop back in their car and try to drive away. Neither is a good situation, so keep your suspicions to yourself until the police arrive.

3. Tell the police your suspicions and let them handle the situation

Once an officer arrives on the scene, you'll have a chance to give your statement. Once you're away from everyone else, let the officer know that you think the other driver is inebriated.

Finally, contact an attorney. While the criminal court may punish a drunk driver for violating the law, that's no consolation when you're suffering from injuries and financial losses related to the wreck. Our website has additional information that may assist you moving forward.
