Top distraction for drivers is still cellphone use

When a Florida driver is behind the wheel, his or her main priority should be the safe operation of the vehicle. Most drivers would agree that they should keep their eyes on the road and their focus on driving safely, but many of them are still tempted by various things that take their attention. Distracted driving remains a significant safety concern, and cellphones play a large part in this.

Cellphones are more common than ever, and they represent a great temptation for many drivers. It may seem harmless to pick up the phone for a second or glance at a text, but the reality is that even a moment of distraction can have devastating consequences. Drivers are responsible for the choices that they make behind the wheel, especially if they cause harm to an innocent motorist.

A closer look at distracting behaviors

AAA recently looked at the problem of distracted driving and identified the most common things that tend to take the attention of drivers and lead to a greater chance of a car accident. The top three things that take a driver's attention include the following:

  • Cellphones
  • In-car technology and infotainment systems
  • Passengers in the vehicle

In 2018, almost 3,000 people died in accidents related to distracted driving, and approximately 400,000 people suffered injuries in these types of crashes. Distracted driving is a serious issue, and it is not one that drivers should underestimate. Looking away from the road for just two seconds doubles the chance of an accident. Looking at a phone for five seconds is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field blindfolded.

Avoid distractions

Each driver should make the choice to avoid looking at cellphones or engaging in distracting behaviors while driving. It can also be helpful to put phones away, turn off electronics and take whatever measures are necessary to avoid things that may be distracting. Safe driving is an important priority for every driver.

If a driver causes an accident because he or she was not paying attention, it is appropriate for those who suffered because of this negligence to pursue compensation through a civil claim. You may find it informative to speak with an attorney about the potential legal options available to you after suffering injuries in an accident.
