Aggressive Advocates For Victims Of Spinal Cord Injuries

Many spinal cord injuries and paralysis are the results of auto accidents, truck wrecks and motorcycle accidents. Victims of spinal cord injuries may become permanently damaged by partial paralysis, paraplegia or quadriplegia before they ever reach the hospital.

The spine works as the main support for the spinal cord and the nerve pathways that carry information from the arms, legs and rest of the body to the brain as well as signals from the brain back throughout the body.

If you have suffered a back or neck injury in an accident, do not depend on an insurance company. It is important to work with an experienced personal injury lawyer who will aggressively advocate for your rights and interests. At Culpepper Kurland, we have helped many clients seek financial compensation for severe neck, back and spinal cord injuries. We understand that back and neck injuries can often be difficult to diagnose or become chronic conditions that last for a lifetime.

How Spinal Injuries Occur

Your back is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae, 31 pairs of nerves, 40 muscles and numerous connecting tendons and ligaments running from the base of your skull to your tailbone. Between your vertebrae are fibrous, elastic cartilage called disks. These “shock absorbers” keep your spine flexible and cushion the hard vertebrae as you move.

When a disk ruptures, a portion of the spinal disk pushes outside its normal boundary — this is called a herniated disk. When a herniated disk bulges out from between the vertebrae, the spinal nerves and spinal cord can become pinched. There is normally a little extra space around the spinal cord and spinal nerves, but if enough of the herniated disk is pushed out of place, then these structures may be compressed.

A herniated disk may occur suddenly in an event such as a fall or an auto accident. When a herniated disk occurs, the space for the nerves is further diminished, and irritation of the nerve results.
