Pedestrians hit hard by distracted driving accidents

Another report has confirmed not only that pedestrian deaths on the roads are increasing to disturbingly high levels but also that distracted driving is largely to blame for this trend.

With around 6,000 fatal pedestrian accidents in 2017, many experts claim that the problem has risen to the level of a safety crisis. Efforts on the part of law enforcement and other public officials and private citizens are needed in order to educate Tampa, Florida, motorists about the dangers of distracted driving.

Interestingly, this report also noted that distracted driving is a particular problem during the summer months of June, July, and August, meaning that Floridians should be aware that they have one more month of what might rightly be called distracted driving season, a time in which the number of distracted driving accidents climbs by about 10 percent relative to the rest of the year.

During the summer, the report claims that 40 percent of the drivers one meets on the road have a 25 percent chance of being distracted because they are distracted for about 15 minutes of every hour that they drive.

The reasons for this trend may be hard to understand, but experts suggest two reasons for it. One, college students and high school students are typically out of class for the summer, meaning they have more time to drive at more times of the day. While distracted drivers come in all ages, genders and the like, adding younger drivers in to that mix seems to increase the incidents of distracted driving.

Moreover, during the summer, many people go on vacations and to other spots that may not be familiar to them. Perhaps because they are looking for a map or directions, they tend to text and drive with a higher frequency.
