Should there be tighter regulations in the rideshare industry?

After a night out with friends, you may not be able to safely drive yourself home. Instead, you may call Uber or Lyft for a ride home. Rideshare companies are increasingly popular as many people choose to pay someone to drive them, especially if they are in a situation when they cannot drive or do not want the hassle of driving and parking a car.

You may be a regular patron of a rideshare company, but have you ever thought about the skill and experience of the person behind the wheel? In order to use a company like Uber or Lyft, you have to have the assumption that the driver will be safe and know how to prevent unnecessary accidents. However, a recent accident brings to light the fact that some rideshare drivers are not safe, and there may be a need for tighter regulations.

Will regulations increase rideshare safety?

This incident took place at an airport in another state, but Florida rideshare users may find it beneficial for their own well-being to get answers to certain safety concerns. In this accident, a woman was pinned between two cars, the second of which was a rideshare vehicle that did not stop or even appear to slow down before the collision.

If you use Uber, Lyft or another similar company, it may come as a surprise to you that these drivers need little more than a valid license and an insurance policy to start transporting passengers. Consider the following:

  • Other professional drivers, such as limo drivers, have to go through background checks, training and other steps before they can start driving.
  • Many believe the federal government should act by passing laws that will enact regulations that will make passengers safer, such as required driver training.
  • It is possible that increased regulations and tighter restrictions could reduce the number of accidents.

Rideshare companies are very popular, and using one of their drivers has many benefits. However, customer safety and the screening of their drivers should be a priority.

If you suffered injuries in an accident caused by a rideshare driver or while in a rideshare vehicle, you have options. It is possible that you have the right to legal recourse under the law. It may help you understand the specific options you have by seeking a complete evaluation as soon as possible after an accident.
