Man severely injured in Tampa motorcycle crash

A man suffered severe injuries while riding his motorcycle on Interstate 275 in the Tampa area. Ultimately, his injuries proved to be fatal. According to statements from law enforcement officers investigating the accident, the man was attempting to exit the freeway at the time of the accident. The driver of a car moved into the exit lane on the freeway, striking the motorcyclist with the vehicle’s right sideview mirror.

The force of the blow sent the motorcyclist onto the shoulder of the road and then into a nearby guardrail. The woman driving the car did stop at the scene of the accident and cooperated with police. She was not hurt in the accident, and it was not clear if authorities planned to file charges or issue a traffic citation.

This story illustrates two important points about motorcycle accidents. First, it serves as an important reminder to all drivers about the need to be aware of motorcycles on the road. Motorcycles are already difficult for even attentive drivers to see, and any amount of inattention or distraction on the part of a motorist can cause a crash.

The second point this story illustrates is that what could well be a minor accident between two full-sized vehicles can be severe if the accident involves a motorcycle. Here, the size difference between the car and the motorcycle likely contributed to the outcome.

Drivers in Florida must on the lookout for motorcyclists on the road, particularly since riding season is now in full swing in this state. If drivers do not do so and cause a motorcycle crash, victims may hold the drivers legally responsible.
